Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how CMVGP LTD trading as "Compare Locals" ("Compare Locals", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses and shares personal data when you use our website, marketplace platform and related services.

Last updated: 1 December 2025

1. Who we are

Compare Locals is operated by CMVGP LTD, a company registered in England & Wales with company number 15614061, trading as "Compare Locals".

  • Registered office: 2nd Floor Skyways Hub, Speke Road, Speke, Liverpool, L70 1AB, United Kingdom
  • Website: https://www.comparelocals.com
  • We act as the data controller for the personal data described in this notice.

2. What this policy covers

This Privacy Policy applies when you:

  • Visit our website or landing pages;
  • Use the Compare Locals platform to request quotes, compare options or make bookings with independent service providers;
  • Receive emails, messages or support from us; or
  • Interact with us in any other way described in this notice.

It does not cover how independent service providers ("Providers") process your personal data when they deliver services to you. Providers are separate data controllers for the services they supply. Their own privacy information will usually apply to that processing.

3. The data we collect

3.1 Information you provide directly

You may provide us with:

  • Contact details – such as your name, email address, phone number and postal address.
  • Booking and quote details – including service type (e.g. man-and-van, cleaning), locations, dates and times, details of the property or items, and any special instructions.
  • Account and communication data – login details (where applicable), messages you send us, Intercom chats, reviews and survey responses.
  • Payment-related information – limited information needed to link payments or refunds to your bookings (for example, transaction identifiers). We do not store your full card details; these are handled by our payment providers.

3.2 Information collected automatically

When you use our website or platform, we automatically collect certain technical and usage information, including:

  • Technical data – IP address, browser type and version, device identifiers, operating system, and time zone settings.
  • Usage data – pages visited, buttons clicked, referring URLs, time spent on pages and similar analytics information.
  • Analytics identifiers – such as pseudonymous client and session identifiers (for example ga_cid and cl_sid) that help us understand how our website and funnels are used.
  • Cookie and consent data – including the contents of our cookie_consent cookie which records whether you have allowed analytics and marketing cookies. For more detail, please see our Cookie Policy.

3.3 Information from third parties

We may receive personal data about you from third parties, such as:

  • Service providers – for example, payment providers, booking/operations systems, communications providers and analytics partners.
  • Advertising and analytics tools – including Google Analytics, Google Ads (where used) and Meta (via the Conversions API), which may provide us with aggregated or pseudonymous information about campaign performance.
  • Other users or Providers – for example, where a Provider shares information about a booking or dispute involving you.

4. How we use your data

4.1 Providing the website and platform

We use your data to operate and provide the Compare Locals platform, including:

  • Allowing you to request quotes, compare options and make bookings;
  • Allocating bookings to independent Providers and managing changes;
  • Providing your chosen Provider with the information they need to deliver the service.

Legal basis: performance of a contract and taking steps at your request before entering into a contract.

4.2 Payments and fraud prevention

We work with payment providers to process payments and refunds, and to prevent fraud and misuse of the platform.

Legal basis: performance of a contract; legitimate interests in preventing fraud; and legal obligations for financial record-keeping.

4.3 Communication and support

We use your contact details and communication history to:

  • Send booking confirmations, reminders and important service updates;
  • Respond to your questions, complaints or support requests;
  • Ask for feedback or reviews to help improve our services.

Legal basis: performance of a contract; legitimate interests in providing effective customer service.

4.4 Analytics and service improvement

We use analytics data to understand how people use the Compare Locals website and funnels, identify issues and plan improvements. This includes using Google Analytics 4 (run via our own servers) and internal analytics based on first-party identifiers like ga_cid and cl_sid.

Legal basis: legitimate interests in improving and securing our services, balanced against your privacy rights and implemented with appropriate consent controls for non-essential cookies.

4.5 Marketing and advertising

We may use your contact details and limited behavioural data to:

  • Send you marketing emails or messages about Compare Locals, where you have opted in or where this is permitted by law. You can opt out at any time.
  • Measure and optimise online advertising campaigns, for example using Google Ads and Meta Conversions API, which may receive hashed identifiers and pseudonymous IDs (such as ga_cid) when your cookie preferences allow it.

Legal basis: your consent for electronic direct marketing where required by law; legitimate interests in promoting and measuring our services where this does not override your rights and freedoms.

4.6 Security, fraud and legal compliance

We use personal data to protect our platform and users, detect and investigate abuse or fraud, handle disputes, and comply with legal or regulatory obligations.

Legal basis: legal obligations; legitimate interests in protecting our business and users.

5. Cookies and tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies as described in our Cookie Policy. In summary:

  • We use first-party cookies (such as cookie_consent, ga_cid and cl_sid) and local storage to remember your preferences and understand how our website is used.
  • We use Google Analytics 4 server-side to measure usage and performance, without embedding GA tracking scripts on every page.
  • We use Meta Conversions API to send certain server-side events to Meta (e.g. for measuring advertising campaigns), only when allowed by your cookie preferences.

You can control non-essential cookies (analytics and marketing) using our cookie banner and your browser settings.

6. When we share your data

We do not sell your personal data. We may share it with:

  • Service providers (processors) – such as hosting and infrastructure providers, payment processors, communications providers, analytics and marketing measurement tools (Google, Meta), and customer support tools (including Intercom).
  • Independent Providers – the third-party service providers you book through Compare Locals. We share only the information needed for them to quote for and deliver the service.
  • Professional advisers – such as lawyers, accountants or auditors, where necessary.
  • Regulators and law enforcement – where we are required to do so by law or to protect our rights or the rights of others.
  • Business transfers – if we restructure, merge or sell part of our business, your data may be transferred to the new operator on terms consistent with this policy.

7. International transfers

Some of our service providers may be based outside the UK or European Economic Area (EEA). Where personal data is transferred internationally, we will ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place, such as Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent mechanisms, or that the transfer is otherwise permitted by applicable data protection law.

8. How long we keep your data

We keep personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including to provide our services, comply with legal and accounting requirements, and resolve disputes. Examples include:

  • Booking and transaction records – typically retained for up to six years in line with legal and tax requirements.
  • Marketing data – retained while you remain subscribed and for a short period afterwards to record your preferences.
  • Analytics data – retained in aggregated or pseudonymous form where possible, and only for as long as needed for analysis and improvement.

9. Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you have certain rights in relation to your personal data, subject to conditions and exceptions. These include:

  • Right of access – to obtain a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification – to have inaccurate or incomplete data corrected.
  • Right to erasure – to request deletion of your data in certain circumstances.
  • Right to restrict processing – to ask us to limit how we use your data in specific situations.
  • Right to data portability – to receive data you provided to us in a structured, commonly used format and to transmit it to another controller where technically feasible.
  • Right to object – to object to processing based on our legitimate interests and to object to direct marketing at any time.
  • Right to withdraw consent – where we rely on your consent (for example, for certain marketing), you can withdraw it at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details in section 11. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) or your local data protection authority.

10. Children

Our services are not intended for children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe we have collected personal data from a child, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

11. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect changes in our services or in the law. The "Last updated" date at the top shows when it was last revised. Where appropriate, we will notify you of material changes, such as by posting a notice on the website or emailing you (where appropriate).
